Warrensburg and Johnson County, Mo., have so many assets, it's a little difficult to know where to begin.
Many rural communities would be happy just to benefit from an influx of nearly 12,000 students. But while this area enjoys a healthy symbiosis with Central Missouri State University, the region has much more.
A few miles east of Warrensburg, Johnson County is host to Whiteman Air Force Base. The impact of this facility and its 6,300 employees is significant. Home for the B2 Stealth Bomber, Whiteman draws personnel from nearly every military service, including the U.S. Navy. There is also a sizable force of technical support from companies such as Northrop Grumman Corporation. Not surprisingly, most of these highly trained professionals call Johnson County home.
Taken together, the university and air base bring major changes to the region. With payroll and contracts, the economic impact is equal to the size of another Warrensburg. The social influence may be even more significant. Residents come not only from Missouri and around the country, but from several nations as well. This cosmopolitan influence has a dramatic impact throughout Johnson County.
The area has not lost touch with its Midwestern roots. Thriving agriculture still forms the foundation of the area's economy and Warrensburg, especially, has built a significant industrial base. Some of the most recent progress occur-red in Warrensburg with refurbishing of the historic downtown. Led by a collaborative mix of public and private organizations, downtown Warrensburg is becoming the focal point for this dynamic area.
